This is Shark’s Cove, a famous snorkeling spot on the north shore of Oahu. This picture is worth (at least) 1000 words to me as it reminds me of a visit I had to this very spot over 20 years ago. Yup, I blinked and TWO decades went by, once again proving the point that time flies no matter what I’m doing.

But I AM grateful that it HAS been fun! 😉

So a few of lessons I have personally learned in this here spot:

  1. Snorkel mask: it fogs up no matter how much of that ‘local plant’ I rub on the glass.
  2. Turtles: look at them, but DON’T TOUCH. In fact, don’t even TRY to reach for them or you may get distracted from your surroundings and brush up against the raiser-sharp coral. THEN, your rib cage may gush out blood and that’s just not a great idea in a place called SHARK’s F#&ING COVE!!!
  3. Underwater camera: Don’t bother carrying a camera and taking pictures. It’s not worth the tricky maneuvers, fumbling and stumbling just in time to catch another TAIL shot! Besides, pictures are just gonna get lost in boxes or old hard drives anyhow. That and under-water images never turn out as good as I hope they will. It’s worth remembering the feelings of the moment. Defog the mask (again) and SEE it there and then.
  4. Friends: no matter how much time or distance passes by, friends my chosen family and I want to be around them again and again.
  5. Companionship: life is meant to be experienced fully and it’s best when shared with someone I appreciate who also appreciates me. I like finding out what’s what and who’s who as often as possible. Else, let that shit go and move on.
